advertising-techniques.doc

  1. We continued today in reading a handout given last class. It discussed things like the popularity of manikins having waist measurements that are six inches smaller than the average women. What is the reasoning for this? Why not display clothing on a manikin that represents a more realistic and average body size?
  2. We looked at 8 types of propaganda techniques used by advertisers and tried to figure out examples of each.
    8 TYPES OF PROPAGANDA:
    1.
Band Wagon:This technique tries to persuade everyone to join in and do the same thing.
    2.
Testimonial: An important person of famous figure endorses a product.
    3.
Transfer: Good feelings, looks, or ideas are transferred to the person for whom the product is intended.
    4.
Repitition: The product name, keyword, or phrase is repeated several times.
    5.
Emotional Words: Words such as luxury, beautiful, paradise, and economical are used to evoke positive feelings in the viewer.
    6.
Name Calling: Negative words are used to create an unfavorable opinion of the competition in the viewer’s mind.
    7.        Faulty Cause and Effect: Use of a product is credited for creating a positive result.
    8.        Compare and Contrast: The viewer is led to believe one product is better than another, although no real proof is offered.
  3. Students have an assignment to create a commercial. The information was given on a handout attached above. Students will have class time to work on this assignment.
