ELA 20: Sept 17 Typing time and summative paragraph of “Childhood”…

  1. Students have computer time for this class to type out their essay. Some will have finished it already.
  2. With today’s time, as well, students will have to write a personal summary of their thoughts about this first sub-unit in ELA 20 that focused on “Childhood”. They can consider the poems, stories, and essays, our talks and any personal reflection they’ve benefited from in looking at that part of their past. It has to be at least six sentences long and is purely for reflection and summary.

English 20 has been pretty easy. We have discussed alot of things about family and childhood memories. The one poem that kinda stood out for me was “(I Remember) Back Home”. The reason this poem stood out to me is because with all of the history and present events that my brother tells me about I can completely understand exactly how it is for the people whom the author talks about. The reflective essay i thought was almost difficult because I don’t have alot to relfect on, but i did end up finding 3 topics that sort of worked. The essay “Back to Wolf Willow” I didn’t really like, it was interesting but it was not the kind of essay I would really read unless I had to.

In this ELA 20 unit about reflecting on the past it has really made me think about my own childhood. It has been neat to see how, really, it is hard to trust our memories when we have become so different with time. All the things we have done in childhood seem so far away because everything we used to do then we no longer do. I like the story “Back to Wolf Willow” because it made this point clear. Then when we wrote are own essay’s it brought it down home and you could actually see in your own life how things are very different from childhood. It was a really great unit I enjoyed it.

The first unit we did in English 20 on “Childhood” was actually quite enjoyable for me. I enjoyed looking back on childhood memories and reflecting on the more fun times in life. Throughout the writing process I brainstormed a lot of childhood memories, which was nice because I don’t do that very often. Presently, I am also enjoying the unit on “Home and Family,” and am looking forward to what else Ms. Waldner has in store for us.

The start of this first unit about looking back on our childhood memories helped me to realize just how precious those times really were. Looking back at my experiences in a different light has given me a deeper more complex idea about what I was going through as a child. I thought it was really neat how the writers in the stories we read have also earned a greater realization on all the things they went through as kids. It really expands your mind to think in a more mature point of view about things you wouldn’t as a kid. I’m grateful that we got to do this unit because I don’t think I would have looked for greater meaning in those experiences. In conclusion I think this ela unit helped me to realize that there is always going to be more than just one point of view, and I am glad I got to take it.
