  1. As we are near to the end of this unit, students began today viewing a movie related to our topic. The movie, The Interpreter, is about a woman raised in Africa who now resides in New York and works as an interpreter for the United Nations. A plot arises to kill a world leader and the F.B. I. is brought in to investigate this threat, but detectives following the case are not sure that she is a trustworthy individual and not actually involved in this plot. Who is she and why is she working at the U.N.?Students are asked to watch the movie and watch for influences in this woman’s life that would have led to the formation of her character and values. Is she good or evil? Why is she one and not the other? What in her past has influenced that?Students will have to write a persuasive essay, to be evaluated by the rubric attached to the assignment. They will also, eventually, be asked to orally read their speech (essay) to the class and be evaluated on their delivery of that speech.

  2. There will be a unit test on our class to date next Wednesday. Students will use Thursday, Friday, and part of Monday to view the movie, work on their essay on Tuesday, write the exam on Wednesday, and then have Thursday (possibly Friday) to finish their essay. They should be prepared to present and deliver their speech March 12 /13.
