MdSt20: Dangers of stereotypes continued…

  1. We continued in our study of the dangerous affects for people who try too hard to follow the stereotypes of their gender.

  2. We watched a video called ‘Thin’ on the internet that discussed and documented the difficultuies of girls suffering from anorexia and bulemia. We read several short essays on the topic and answered some questions together.

  3. Next we discussed the dangers for men when they try to follow the stereotypes. While the violence of stereotypes for women comes in self-violence and unhealthy attitudes about body image, the danger and violence among men comes when they develop unhealthy attitudes towards women. We tried to view some excerpts from The Man Show, a show that caters and finds humor in taking these negative attitudes and sexist ideas to extremes.

ELA B10: Video “A Time To Kill” focusing on racism of blacks in America…

  1. Students have two classes until the break and several students were planning on being gone tomorrow so students had the opportunity to view a video very relevant to this unit. The movie focuses on racial relations in the South (USA) where two white men rape a 10 year old black girl. The father of the young girl, fearing racial bias will allow the two men to be found ‘not guilty’, killed them both as they were led into the court. The political tensions between defense and prosecutors, white and blacks in the county, and the involvement of the KKK all make for a tense plot.
  2. We will continue and finish the video tomorrow.

  1. We continued through the rest of the notes from Ch 7 and students participated in orally answering questions regarding what we’ve learned.
  2. Once finished, students completed an open-book quiz with specific questions from the unit thus far. This was handed in at the end of class.
  3. After that was completed, students were to take their list of 40 concepts comprised together in class yesterday and define them to be sure they are comfortable with the terms and phrases.

Hist 30: Feb 14 Chapter 7 discussion and notes…

  1. Two things were due to be handed in today:
    1. The Thirteen Primary Documents assignment
    2. The Library Search assignment
  2. Students were to have finished their Chapter 7 handout and created their own notes from it. We read through notes on the overhead that went through the major pieces of information from the reading. Students were to add to their notes information they hadn’t previously had. We read through half of the notes and then stopped.
  3. Together as a class, the students each found a few words or phrases, people or places to add to a list of 40 concepts we have studied so far. This list will be used for their personal review and preparation for the unit test coming soon.

ELA B30: Feb 14 Independent work class…

  1. This is the fifth class students have had to work on this project of analyzing and answering questions on 5 poems, 2 stories, and 2 essays.
  2. Because students are working independently and have had several classes to work, I did a homework check to measure where they are in their progress. While some students are finished five or more, a few students are still working on their second, if that. The purpose of the homework check wasn’t to catch kids falling behind but simply to become aware that they were that far behind and then address that. Especially since this is their fifth hour of working on it in class time.
  3. This project, as we discussed together, will have a due date of February 26, the Monday we return from the holiday break.

MdSt 20: Feb 14 Dangers of stereotypes…

  1. We began the class with a look at the lyrics of songs. We looked through one Nickelback song and two Pink ones to analyze what perceptions were given of male and female genders. We also watched the Pink video that directly mocks and criticizes the influence of media on controling the mindset of young girls to follow unhealthy habits.
  2. We watched a dove campaign commercial that shows how much extra work goes into the photo of a model that ends up on a billboard by a road. The students were surprised by the extra digital adjustments made for the final picture.
  3. Next we watched a satire made to mock this process to alter photos. It took an attractive male model and transformed him instead into a slob because if people didn’t try to be more like magazine models then they would look ugly and ordinary and what an ‘ugly world that would be’.

This video is Pink’s own criticism of the media’s negative influence on young girls to follow an unhealthy ideal of what ‘female’ should be.

This video details the processing a photograph goes through to create an image. This is obviously an unrealistic image young girls are influenced to believe in.

This commercial goes one step further and mocks the original Dove commercial. It’s focus isn’t that people should be made to become slobs, but instead argues that if people are not given an ideal to ‘aim’ for that we would have a society of people who don’t take any care to look and dress their best.

ELA B10: Feb 13 “Goodbye Mariane” play…

  1. We reviewed what we have taken so far in this unit. We discussed again what the topic of the unit was for reminder and then we began to read a play aloud together. The setting was in 1938 where the Jews were restricted more and more by the Nuremburg Laws. This play was from the first person perspective of a young girl struggling to understand the hatred shown to her.
  2. When done, students were to try to put themselves in her place and write a half page reflection of how they would feel when facing that unfairness.
