MdSt 20: Feb 26 Dangers of media effects in men…

  1. We reviewed what I am asking for in constructing a media log and what a media entry might look like. Students are to have three media logs completed for Friday to ensure they have started this project and are on the right track.
  2. We looked at a few possible Media Log entries for students to look into and research.
    1. Pink Lyrics: We read two Pink lyrics and found they perpetuated positive images and values to young girls. What about the rest of the lyrics in her album, though? You could read through the lyrics to the rest of the songs on one of her albums (available online) and see whether, as a whole, Pink would be considered to be a positive role model in perpetuating positive images for women?
    2. Pro-Anorexic Websites: We have talked about the self violence of young girls in falling into the belief that girls have to be thin to be considered beautiful. Some girls develop the disorder of Anorexia but there are websites online that are promoting  Anorexia or other eating disorders. Is there any benefit to these websites, like allowing for a way of girls suffering to talk to each other for support in chat rooms, etc, or is there purely negative effects to come from such a site?
    3. Body image: Why do more women than men get plastic surgery? Why are women targetted in their body imaging more so than men, or are they? How does the media target men if not through body image?
  3. We looked at the unhealthy attitudes developed by men who feel they need to fit into the male stereotypes. Because men don’t cry, finding healthy ways to release natural stresses and feelings can lead to violence against self or others.

ELA B10: Feb 26 Finish viewing of movie…

  1. We continued viewing the movie A Time To Kill with the major themes of injustice and prejudice.
  2. Once finished, I read to the students a piece of Hate Literature that was circulated around Northern Saskatchewan in the 1990s by someone employed with the Provincial Government in the Department of Parks and Renewable Resources. It is a mock memo that discusses “Open Season on Indians” intended to “weed out” the number of Indians in the province every three years. This literature was found to be Hate Literature. We had a lengthy discussion over it.
  3. Also, we began reading through a political pamphlet circulated by Liberal Member of Parliament, Jim Pankiw. The front page of the pamphlet says “Stop Indian Crime”. The basis of the information given is to mislead the general public into believing inacurrate assumptions Pankiw makes based on the statistics he has found, such as the majority percentage of people in Saskatchewan jails are Native therefore Natives perpetuate more crimes than others. The fact that the population of Aboriginal to non-Aboriginal is uneven may have something to do with this but Pankiw ignores this fact.

Possible Media Log topic…

Watching CBC News: Sunday this morning, I was interested in a short report on the new trend in male dating approaches. “The Cad” is back! There is a show, I didn’t catch the name of it, but it follows male competitors who are out at bars and clubs trying to pick up women. The competition, and alarming, part of the show is in the men picking out a woman they see and then trying to get their number or hook up with them. All the while a camera follows them and the men are miked so we hear their conversation, with subtitles added for viewers. There are four judges who are viewing the man’s approach and tactics who give a commentary on it and make comments about the women these men have chosen. This sounds like a scary show to me. Do these women eventually learn that they were targetted and their reactions and discussion displayed on tv for an audience to view? Are they given a disclaimer that they have signed to allow the use of their picture and name? Does this not seem quite predatory of guys to narrow in on a woman they think is a ‘target’, for whatever reason, and pull out all the stops to nab the prize? And how far does this show go? Do these guys stop at just getting a number?
The report on CBC this morning was discussing the return of ‘the cad’ or ‘the player’ in media and popular culture. For those who have viewed “Briget Jone’s Diary”, the character of Daniel, played perfectly by Hugh Grant, is a perfect example of a guy out there to get the ladies and play around, seeking his own enjoyment and fullfillment, at the expense of others. He took advantage of Briget’s vulnerability and lied to get what he wanted from her, ultimately letting her down and hurting her cruelly.

The ‘media log’ potential that exists here is to do a study of a number of movies or tv shows and figure out if you’re seeing a trend in the ‘user’ as well. Or, do you think instead, that it has always continued to be there in media? This report seemed to make the claim that it is socially acceptable ‘again’ to be this kind of manipulator, for men, so it gives the impression that it was cool at one point and then was unacceptable for a time. What do you think? Do you think this is a trend in media moving towards the more predatory dating style, or is this just one of the many types of dating approaches demonstrated in media. Another question for you: Are women made to seem more predatory now as well? Maybe this isn’t just a male trend but a general social trend towards relationships and dating, the unhealthy, selfish, casual experience for both men and women alike. What do you think?

Lots of questions. Could you find an answer you would be satisfied with? This is the purpose of media logs.

Hist 30: Feb 16 Concept map work…

  1. Students were to take their 40 concepts found together as a class the other day and create a concept map, complete with linking phrases. This activity is meant to be a review and study activity to prepare for the unit exam coming the week we return from the break. We are nearly finished unit one.
