MdSt 20: Feb 26 Dangers of media effects in men…

  1. We reviewed what I am asking for in constructing a media log and what a media entry might look like. Students are to have three media logs completed for Friday to ensure they have started this project and are on the right track.
  2. We looked at a few possible Media Log entries for students to look into and research.
    1. Pink Lyrics: We read two Pink lyrics and found they perpetuated positive images and values to young girls. What about the rest of the lyrics in her album, though? You could read through the lyrics to the rest of the songs on one of her albums (available online) and see whether, as a whole, Pink would be considered to be a positive role model in perpetuating positive images for women?
    2. Pro-Anorexic Websites: We have talked about the self violence of young girls in falling into the belief that girls have to be thin to be considered beautiful. Some girls develop the disorder of Anorexia but there are websites online that are promoting  Anorexia or other eating disorders. Is there any benefit to these websites, like allowing for a way of girls suffering to talk to each other for support in chat rooms, etc, or is there purely negative effects to come from such a site?
    3. Body image: Why do more women than men get plastic surgery? Why are women targetted in their body imaging more so than men, or are they? How does the media target men if not through body image?
  3. We looked at the unhealthy attitudes developed by men who feel they need to fit into the male stereotypes. Because men don’t cry, finding healthy ways to release natural stresses and feelings can lead to violence against self or others.
