ELA 10: Oct 15 Introduction to The Chrysalids novel study…

  1. We started the class with a bit of a discussion of the assignment given last Friday when I was away. I elaborated more on what was expected and we decided, as a class, that Friday would be an appropriate due date. Students seemed very interested in this assignment and had several drafts of illustrations to choose from. They were reminded not to forget the written portion of the assignment, which is worth nearly equal marks to the illustration part.
  2. We began reading through an article written that looked at the possible negative effects of technology. Students seem to have come to a consensus when they say they beleive that technology will come with negatives and positives and it is whichever viewpoint you choose to look through that will determine whether you are against progress or for it.
  3. We began reading an overview of why the author wrote this novel, that it was social criticism aimed towards the close-mindedness of societies as they considered whether to use the atomic bomb to end their conflicts with other societies, and that the author mocks any individual who fears progress and change. We read through an outline of the story and students were each given a novel for their use. We will get into more of the story in our next class but this will be the focus of our studies for the next three weeks.
  4. There will also be a mid-unit exam on Friday to test students on what we have discussed and taken in class to this date.
