ELA 30: Oct 11 Pc time for multi-media projects / “The Canadian Personality”…

  1. Students had two classes of English today.
  2. In the first class, they came prepared to continue working on their poetry multi-media presentations. I was very impressed with how focused they were in working in the computer lab.  I am looking forward to seeing these presentations when they are completed.
  3. During the second class, I challenged the students to come up with a definition of “Goodsoil”. They listed several adjectives but pressing them for more information brought about the need to compare Goodsoil to another place in order to give it context. It is that comparison that is often used when trying to define what a Canadian is or what the character or personality is of Canadians. The ultimate comparison for such a question is that we are “not” Americans.
  4. We read together the essay by Bruce Hutchison titled “The Canadian Personality”. There were a few questions attached that we answered together but through the essay, I pointed out to the students how several of the key things we’ve studied in our course so far were repeated in the essay. We had a good discussion about the general humility of Canadians and our inability to take too much pride in our achievements.
  5. Students will have another computer class tomorrow in first period to work on their multi-media project. Their project is due on Thursday
