ELA 20: Jan 9

  1. Today, we continued with our slight acting out of the play as we read. Students were broken up into different groups and read through, to preview, a particular scene. As we get to each scene, these different groups come up to go through the ‘motions’ of the characters for the audience / class. The benefit in this is that this play is meant to be ‘seen’ and not simply read through. Understanding fully the way the author intended this piece of work to be appreciated is aided by being able to visually see and hear the motions and moods of the characters.
  2. The kids were really getting into their parts! It was a great afternoon of acting. Even the part where Tad (playing Tom) was trying to leave his apartment after a fight with his mother, he struggled in his rage to get his jacket on and finally tried to tear it off himself and just throw it across the room, eventually breaking some of his sister’s dearly cared for glass menagerie pieces. Having a coffee mug on the floor made the perfect ‘tinking’ sound as Tad whipped a jacket to the floor, tipping the glass. It had a perfect effect for the students in hearing the breaking sound of the glass that obviously was symbolic of other things and would be crushing to Tom’s sister. Great job getting involved in this play, Grade elevens!
