Hist 30: May 9 Coninuation of notes and video clip…

  1. Today’s class went great with students carefully following along in the notes as I read and discussed the concepts. They filled in the answers in the missing spaces of their handout and wrote several extra notes in the margins to help point out important points of the unit.
  2. A lot of the discussion focused on how, in Canada after the war, citizens of the country grew to believe the government was in an alliance with businesses in an effort to take advantage of Canadian workers. Farmers and labour groups eventually organized and tried to bring attention to the government, asking them to intervene in the lives of people and assist them financially during the Depression.
  3. Because the students did such a super job of listening, being attentive, and contributing to the discussion, we took the last ten minutes of class and watched a portion of the movie Cinderella Man with Russel Crowe. This movie is set during the Depression and the scene we watched clearly showed the difference between the living conditions of people in the 30s before and after the Depression hit.
Through this clip, also, I pointed out to the students that this is an example of Social Injustice which is the topic we are discussing in their English class.

Hist 30: May 8 Read through notes and work time…

  1. For the first half of class, students followed along in the Unit Three Notes handout and filled in the answers, as I read, in the given spaces. It works much better when students are less anxious, less chatty, and listen more carefully.
  2. For the second half of class, students were given time to work on the handout given yesterday and the questions attached. We will do a homework check on these questions tomorrow.

Hist 30: May 2 Barely anyone here!!

  1. Today, there were only ten or so students in attendance. (Everyone’s so worried about their dresses and plans that they’re forgetting they’ll have to actually PASS to get the real Certificate! :P)
  2. Because a few boys were whining that they never got to watch cool stuff, like the media studies class had done the class earlier, we used some free time today and watched a few interesting clips about politics and media today. The internet is changing how people get their information, the type they get, and how reliable it is. Oh, and we watched some David Blaine too. lol
This free class was my Graduation Gift to you. Happy Grad!

Hist 30: April 25 Unit three notes / discussion…

  1. For each of the past units, I’ve taken the notes and had them typed in a handout for students. We continued with this today by beginning unit three’s notes. We took advantage of the beautiful day and started outside but the surroundings were a bit too distracting. We finished inside and continued adding the correct answers in the spaces empty in the student handout.
  2. There will be a short quiz on Friday with anything we have taken since the chapter handout on the CPR.
