  1. Students have finished viewing the movie, Uprising, and now have to write a first-hand account of some sort in a narrative paragraph writing assignment. They have to assume a character (someone who would have witnessed the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) and write either a letter, a journal entry, or some other type of writing in four to five paragraphs. This assignment is due Monday, December 11.

  2. Also, the students have been learning about propaganda and the use of it by European leaders like Stalin and Hitler. I think they were a little surprised to see that Disney created propagandist cartoons to create an image and distaste for the Germans during WWII.
Here is a banned video that is no longer viewable from the Disney archives, but… it Is amazing what you can find on the World Wide Web! What do you think of it? Leave a comment.

Narrative Paragraph Writing

Response Assignment Handout

  1. Today is the final day of viewing the video, Uprising.  Students were to note down examples of discrimination and persecution of the Jews by the Germans while they watched. Also, they were asked to keep a list of personal reflections as they watched of things they had a strong response to.
  2. Now that they have finished viewing the movie, they have a Narrative Writing Assignment to do. They worked on narrative writing last year so it should go fairly smoothly. This writing will be due Monday, December 11.

Hist 20: Dec 6

  1. Students continued watching the video Uprising.Yesterday, just before the bell was going to ring, there was a very tense scene building up in the video. We, as a class, decided to quickly turn the video off so the ‘action’ wouldn’t begin and then be interupted by the bell. After making this decision, though, we had to make a made dash to the tv to in fact turn it off before things got going!! It certainly added to our excitement with our own panick trying to stop the video before the bell. We all laughed at how silly it was. Was a good class!
  2. Today, we begin the class right at the beginning of this tension. They’re excited to see it.
  3. One of the benefits of viewing this movie is it shows the Nazis ‘constructing’ and ‘controlling’ what they put into their propoganda film about the Jews. Below are several examples of propoganda, some with actual footage and others cartoon productions by anti-Nazi groups. This should help clarify for students what the idea of Propaganda is.

Disney produced this cartoon with Donald Duck working in a nazi munitions factory. The depiction of the German soldiers was the American way of convincing people of the evils of Nazis.
