We began today in the other classroom and watched several short clips focused on violence in media. Students had to write the title of the clip down, watch it and make any notes during their viewing, but then write a reflection of what they thought after watching the clip. We were able to watch five or so during the class and some of them the students found very interesting. They commented that they enjoyed this activity, which is cool because so did I!The following are some of the clips we watched…. Continue reading
Students began the class with a short story they had to read individually. While or after they read, they had to fill in the same narration elements chart they used when we had an oral reading assignment to assess their comprehension. It was the same chart only this time it was to assess their comprehension of what they read themselves, not just what they listen to.
Once finished that, students had the remainder of the class to continue working on their Narration story-telling assignment that is due to be presented tomorrow.
I began the class with handing back a whole shwack of assignments from History and English that were handed in just prior to the report card deadline.
We continued reading through the typed unit notes handout and had a few student presentations as we went along.
We stopped when Indian Treaties were introduced in the notes and I described a bit of how the treaties were negotiated. We discussed why the treaties were each different and why B.C. Aboriginals did not sign treaty. This makes their lifestyles very different from Treaty Indians. That could be an exam question.
Students worked together on the retelling of the narrative story project. This is the last class they will be given to write it and it is due for presentations on Thursday.
Students were to have their 40 words and phrases due today.
We reviewed how to construct the poem and students used the class to write these. When a few students had finished, I put them in charge of taking the photographs of each student that will accompany the poems on display.
We continued today with our discussion on the effects of stimulus addictions to games.
We watched several clips from youtube on the subject such as one that showed the progression of video game graphics from the beginning to current, and another parody done that mocked the addiction of kids to video games.
We returned to the classroom and the students were given an assignment to find ten examples of realistic violence in the media and ten examples of unrealistic. When considering whether violence is realistic or not, students were directed to consider the consequences and images of violence they see in media and decide for themselves from there. This is due tomorrow.
We moved along today and started with a discussion on a theme that is expressed through both the novel Night and the previous essay we have read titled “Shooting and Elephant.” We talked about how basic human reactions to situations are fairly consistent, regardless of that individual’s personal past and beliefs.
We answered the questions they had previously finished with the “Shooting and Elephant” essay.
Students used the rest of the class to work on their assignments due Thursday.
Students came one at a time to talk about their English mark and how it was calculated.
Students contributed to a good discussion regarding their own interest, or lack of interest, with video games. We read through several handouts and talked about the potential negative effects of the stimulus addiction that can come with video games.
We have finished all dicussions of the novel Of Mice and Men so we are continuing on through our unit on Equality.
We began with a short story titled “Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Myzer”. I read the story aloud as students either followed along or listened. Each student had a handout where they had to list the parts of the story, such as describing the setting, the characters, parts of the plot, etc. This was to be done individually and handed in right away. This will be evaluated to assess how well an individual student is able to comprehend and recall information from the story.
Once the oral reading was done, students paired up and were given the assignment to retell the same story but with a modern or present day touch. They had the rest of the class to work on coming up with their story.
