ELA B10: June 3 Writing period 2 of 3…

  1. Students continued working on their narrative writing assignment. They had yesterday to brainstorm and fill out the outline for all the necessary parts of the narrative. Today, then, they were able to begin the writing process.
Some students would prefer to write their stories out on the computers but to practice the process of writing, this time they have to write it out on paper and edit before typing it.
  2. Students were also reminded any late or missing assignments will have to be handed in by this Friday. No exceptions, beyond this point.
  3. Anyone interested in improving their writing Blog mark, there are six new topics relevant to the unit we are studying currently. If you want to write entries for these, you may work to improve your blog mark that is worth 10% of your overall class grade.
For each, the same as the original blog entries, you must write two paragraph posts, add a link to a related article or other blog, link a video that supports or adds to your discussion, and then add a comment to someone else’s blog. (For the entries, keep a record of whose blog you comment on, so they can be sure to accept the comments and you’ll be able to get credit for doing them.)

The topics for the new blog entries are:
    1. There are some authors who are famous for writing in the Mystery genre. Choose one and discover how their writing is unique and what influence it may have had on recent writings.
    2. The Horror genre has really expanded and is quite popular in mainstream media. Why are they so popular and how have they changed in recent years?
    3. Magicians today perform similar feats as magicians of the past, but their tricks have to be quite developed. Pick a current magician and find out what influenced them to go into magic.
    4. The Fantasy genre is unique and must include certain elements that separate it from other genres like mystery or science fiction. What makes a story a Fantasy story and what are some of the more popular ones?
    5. Many science fiction stories show the effects of science on society as being quite negative. Explain and explore this. Find a few examples of science fiction writing and explain whether it shows science in a negative or positive light.
    6. Several things remain unexplained in our world – Big Foot, the Chubacabra, Roswell, the Lochness Monster, etc. Choose one of these and discuss what you think the reality behind the mystery is.
