B10: June 2 Narrative Writing Assignment… Work period 1 of 3…

  1. Students were given what will be their last major assignment before the end of our Unit. They were told a few weeks ago that they would be writing a short story and today they were given time in class to begin that.
  2. Each student was given a handout that outlined all the parts to a narrative essay that are necessary for a complete and well-written story. We discussed all the parts of the outline and I gave them examples for each. Students were asked to brainstorm and “plan their narrative essay” before they were allowed to begin writing it. The purpose of this is so you can carefully include all the necessary parts, rather than add them in after writing and lose a momentum or smoothness to your writing.

One part to refocus, in this assignment, is that the topic must relate to one of our sub-units: the unknown, mysterious, fantasy or science fiction. Some students were distracted with the task and planned for a short story but not one that suited the topic requirement.

  3. They will have tomorrow’s class and Wednesday’s for their writing (by hand on paper), we will discuss a related topic on Thursday, and Friday they will have class time to begin typing it out. Hopefully, they will work hard so they will be ready for use that computer time on Friday.
  4. On Friday, as well, they can use a few minutes to complete their blog assignment from last week. They had to write a paragraph explaining their response to the Crop Circle articles we read together.
